At the January 6 regular meeting, the Marion City Council selected Council Member Ann Harkey as Mayor Pro Tem. The decision was made by a majority vote among council members. Harkey has been part of the Marion City Council for eight years.

According to North Carolina law, municipalities must appoint a Mayor Pro Tem after each municipal election. The person chosen takes on the mayor’s responsibilities if the mayor is absent or unable to serve.

A statement from the city expressed appreciation for Harkey’s service and leadership in her new role: “We appreciate Council Member Harkey’s continued service and leadership to the City of Marion in this additional role.”

The announcement follows recent weather-related emergency updates in the community. The city encouraged residents to join in recognizing Harkey’s appointment: “Please help us celebrate Mayor Pro Tem Ann Harkey!”
