Austin, Texas, and Raleigh occupy the top two spots for fastest growing millennial populations in a new Pew Research Center survey.
Defining millennials as those between the ages of 21 to 36 in 2017 and born between 1981 and 1996, researchers found the millennial population grew by 14.4 percent in Austin from 2013 to 20017 or by 71,069 residents.
Known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” researchers noted Austin’s combination of “a thriving tech industry, sunny weather, and a thrilling nightlife and entertainment scene” have made it a magnet for many young millennials. In addition, major employers such as Dell, Apple, IBM and the state government have proven to hold much appeal.
In the Raleigh area, the millennial population grew by 13.3 percent over that same time, or 36,117 residents.
Again, the area’s thriving tech industry proved to be a major attraction for young millennials with Cisco and IBM topping the list of large-scale industry employers in the area.
A string of top-tier universities across the area that includes the likes of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and Duke University have also proven to be a top attraction.
Rounding out the survey’s top 10 in order are Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro; Boise City, Idaho; Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise; Charlotte-Concord- Gastonia; Nashville-Davidson-Franklin; Des Moines-West Des Moines; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Ogden-Clearfield, Utah.
