North Carolina Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) called out Gov. Roy Cooper’s education appointees after their August vote not to expand virtual charter enrollment.
Moore reacted to the news that a total of 3,800 more students will not be added to enrollment at the North Carolina Virtual Academy and N.C. Cyber Academy.
“It should shock parents that the governor's education appointees would block virtual learning access for their children during a pandemic, but unfortunately opposing classroom options for families is a key pillar of N.C. Democrats' K-12 agenda,” Moore said in a Facebook post on Aug. 18.
The schools in question have a combined enrollment of 5,000 students and a waiting list of 9,500, Education Week reported on Aug. 17. However, the report also noted that the state has designated the schools' first four years of academic performance as low-performing since they were created in 2015. The schools were not evaluated last year because of COVID-19.
The state board voted 7-5 to reject expansion, which also included a "no" vote from an appointment made by the former Republican governor, Education Week reported.
