McDowell County Schools issued the following announcement on Jul. 31.
McDowell County Schools has important information for students, staff, and families regarding some changes to the COVID-19 protocols in the 2021-2022 school year. On July 29, the McDowell County Board of Education voted to make face coverings optional for all district campuses and facilities effective Monday, August 2. Face coverings are required for all passengers on school and activity buses, per federal guidelines, until further notice.
We encourage anyone eligible for the vaccine to consider getting one. We also ask those who are not vaccinated or ineligible to receive the vaccine to make an informed decision regarding the wearing of face coverings. McDowell County Schools will continue all other protocols to help mitigate the spread of the virus and ask that we all be good neighbors in these efforts, as well. The district will continue to monitor and assess conditions to consider any changes that might become necessary.
With Eastfield Global Magnet School already in session and our two Cooperative Innovative High Schools beginning this coming week, we wanted to make sure to get this information to you today. We will communicate again should circumstances change.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to deal with COVID-19.
We look forward to a great 2021-2022 school year together.
