Board Continues Requirement for Face Coverings Indoors
Due to the surge of COVID-19 cases in the county during early August the McDowell County Board of Education voted to support the recommendation of superintendent Mark Garrett to move from optional to required face coverings for all students, staff, and visitors inside MCS facilities during the August 16 monthly meeting. Part of that decision included the promise to review the situation on a regular basis in order to determine when we might be able to move back to face coverings being optional.
The Board held to that promise during its Work Session on Monday evening. Mr. Garrett shared the current data from county health officials and members of the Board discussed the matter at length. After much deliberation, and due to the ongoing increase of cases and current status of the county, the Board agreed that wearing face coverings indoors is the best way for the district to maintain the ability to keep schools open under current circumstances. The requirement for face coverings on buses continues as a federal mandate and is not open for discussion at this time.
The Board and the superintendent will continue to monitor the status in the county, and the most current data will be reviewed and discussed at the September meeting.
