A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Rutherford County Election Department in North Carolina on February 5, 2025. The request was made by Foothills Review, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In the request, we sought detailed information about all candidates running for office in the upcoming election. The specifics included each candidate's first, middle, and last name; the office they are vying for; the jurisdiction of that office; and their party affiliation.
Furthermore, we requested contact information for each candidate, including their address, phone number, and email address. This information is crucial for us at Foothills Review as it allows us to reach out directly to candidates for comments or clarifications on their campaign platforms or any other relevant issues.
As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to these public records is essential. We believe this access will help us fulfill our professional responsibilities more effectively. Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we have also asked for a fee waiver as a media professional.
