A new analysis found that for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the average teacher salary in North Carolina was $54,682, the Center Square reported on May 25.
"While teacher salary data dominate the headlines, North Carolinians should be mindful of the increasing cost of public school employee benefits," Terry Stoops, vice president of research and director of education studies at the John Locke Foundation, a conservative nonprofit think tank, told the news agency.
The review was conducted by the Department of Public Instruction's Division of School Business for its public school budget analysis.
Stoops also said that health care and pension costs are taking away from money that could've been used for salaries, urging lawmakers to address pension liabilities, the Center Square reported.
The average salary marks a 1% increase from the previous fiscal year, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's Division of School Business's Highlights of the North Carolina Public School Budget analysis, the news agency reported.
Stoops said that since the 2009-2010 fiscal year, state funds going to charter schools has increased 291%, the news agency reported.
