Speaker Moore says governor should use National Guard during protests

North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) criticized Gov. Roy Cooper’s response to riots that occurred during protests over the death of a Black man by a white Minneapolis police officer that sparked nationwide unrest.

Some of the protests have had people riot and clashed with police officers. Moore said that any type of lawlessness will not be permitted, calling on the Democratic governor to do a better job, during a June 1 press conference, the News & Observer reported on June 2

“I’m calling on the governor to fully mobilize the National Guard to make sure these cities and these communities are safe going forward,” Moore said, the Charlotte News & Observer reported. “We’ve now had, if you count Charlotte, three nights of unrest, three nights of looting, three nights of rioting in various cities across the state.”

George Floyd, 46, died in Minneapolis while he was under arrest for allegedly presenting a counterfeit $20 bill to a store clerk. Police officer Derek Chauvin was reported to have had his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. Chauvin has since been charged with murder.

“The death of Mr. Floyd is absolutely inexcusable,” he said, the News & Observer reported, “and those police officers who committed this heinous crime should spend the rest of their lives in prison as far as I’m concerned.”
